Origins

Originating from Shanghai, China and influenced by global R&D powerhouses, Shanghai Langbo was rooted in principles of research and innovation coupled with strong intellectual property rights. Inspired by US-based InterDigital – a leader in wireless communication technology and a successful licensor of its patented technologies – Langbo implemented a similar approach of developing technologies essential to today's cellular standards and making its patented innovations available for licensing by implementers of those standards.

Langbo was founded by Dr. Yang Lin, a PhD in wireless communications who began his career working for Bell Labs, then Alcatel-Lucent. Dr. Yang built his research team of scientists and PhDs from an array of backgrounds, including several from well-respected R&D organizations such as Sony, Philips, Sharp, Huawei, ZTE and Datang.

Despite Langbo's small team of researchers, its technological impact has been significant, garnering mention alongside industry-recognized leaders in the cellular IP landscape. For example, at the time of Apogee 5G Global's portfolio acquisition, Shanghai Langbo was listed in the 2025 LexisNexis 5G SEP Report at 23rd in the top 50 5G patent owners, by Patent Asset Index.

February 2025

Apogee 5G Global, LLC acquired over 2,700 patents and applications from Langbo covering key technical solutions specified in 5G cellular standards.

Since the acquisition, Apogee 5G Global has grown the portfolio to approximately 3,300 patents and applications and continues to invest in global protection of these critical wireless technologies.
